How To Volunteer

At The Women's Center, you can be a program volunteer, organize a wish list drive or assist with special events. If you would like information on volunteering at The Women's Center, please contact volunteer@womenscentertc.org or call 817-927-4006.

Program Volunteers


VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Twice a year, volunteer orientations are held to allow prospective adult volunteers an opportunity to learn more about volunteering in one of our programs.  The next orientation is:

When: Saturday, September 11, 2010 - 10:00 a.m. - Noon

A volunteer application and packet will be mailed to you.

An individual interview, a criminal background check, and two complete references are
required in addition to the trainings listed below before volunteering can begin.

Victim Advocate Volunteer
Volunteers provide peer counseling and emotional support to sexual assault survivors and their families at the hospital and on the Rape Crisis & Victim Services Hotline. Must have own transportation.

A seven-session training is required.
Training sessions are:
Saturdays: Sept. 18, 25 and Oct 2
                       from 8:30am - 5pm
                   Oct. 9 from 9am - noon
Tuesdays: Sept. 21, 28 & Oct 5
                       from 5:30pm - 9pm


Helpline Volunteer
(see information below)

Adult Literacy Tutor
Tutor adults in literacy skills within a small group setting. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.
 
A weekly commitment is required.

A four-session training is required.  
Training sessions are:
Tuesdays, Sept 21 & Oct 5 from 6pm - 8:30pm.
Observation: Wednesday or Thursday, Sept. 29 or 30
                        from 6pm - 9pm.
Team Tutoring: Wednesday or Thursday, Oct. 13 or 14                         from 6pm - 9pm.
                    

Children's Tutor & Activities Volunteer
Provide homework help and assist with crafts and activities for children 12 years and younger while their parents are participating in the Adult Literacy program. Volunteers are needed Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.  Weekly commitment is preferred.

A two-session training is required.
Training sessions are:
Tuesday, Sept. 21 from 6pm - 8:30pm
Observation: Wednesday or Thursday,Sept 29 or 30
                         from 6pm - 9pm

 

Helpline Volunteer
On the phone, volunteers provide emotional support and problem-solving assistance to people in difficult and sometimes crisis situations. They offer information about The Women's Center, along with referrals to appropriate community resources.

The Helpline is answered Monday-Friday,
8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

A two-part training session is required.
Training sessions will be scheduled for September, 2010.

Service Projects
Please contact us for more information on these and other short-term opportunities

Host a donation drive to collect items such as:
     Ladies sweatpants for crime victims        
     Reading glasses             
     Gas gift cards
     Flash drives
     Full-size toiletries
     Journals
     Canvas messenger style bags for adult literacy           students
     Canvas tote bags

Sponsor children from a Women's Center client family for the holidays.

Volunteer to wrap donated Christmas gifts.

Donate gift cards to department stores, bookstores, restaurants or movie theaters for clients who may be spending the holidays alone.

 

Special Events

 

  • Victory Over Violence Walk/Run
    Saturday, April 10, 2010
    Volunteer at the event by helping at a water station, in the refreshment area, at registration, on the course or at the finish line.
