How To Volunteer

At The Women's Center, you can be a program volunteer, organize a service project or assist with special events. If you would like information on volunteering at The Women's Center, please contact volunteer@womenscentertc.org. Or call 817-927-4006.

Program Volunteers


VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Twice a year, volunteer orientations are held to allow prospective adult volunteers an opportunity to learn more about volunteering in one of our programs.  

The next orientation is:

Helpline Volunteer
On the Helpline, volunteers provide emotional support, problem solving assistance and referrals to community resources for women in difficult and crisis situations. The Helpline is answered Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. A two-part training will be held in September 2009.

 

 

Rape Crisis & Victim Services Volunteer
Volunteers provide peer counseling and emotional support to survivors of sexual assaults and other crimes as well as assistance to the family members. This 24-hour service is provided at area hospitals and on the Rape Crisis & Victim Services Hotline.

A seven-session training is required:
Saturdays: Sept. 19, 26 and Oct 3 :  
                             8:30am - 5:00pm
  
and Saturday Oct 10 : 9:00am - 12noon
Thursdays: Sept. 24, Oct 1 and 8. :
                   5:30pm - 9:00pm


An individual interview, a criminal background check, and two complete references are required in addition to the above trainings before program volunteering can begin. A six-month commitment is required.

Adult Literacy Tutor
Tutor adults in literacy skills in a small group setting. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.


A four-session training is required:
Tuesdays Sept. 22 & Oct 6 : 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Observation:
Wednesday or Thursday Sept. 30 or Oct 1 :
               6:00 - 9:00pm
Team Tutoring:
    Wednesday or Thursday Oct 14 or 15 : 6:00 - 9:00pm
         

Children's Tutor & Activities Volunteer Provide homework help and assist with crafts and activities for children 12 years and younger while their parents are participating in the Adult Literacy program. Volunteers are needed Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.

A two-session training is required:
Tuesday Sept. 22 : 6:00pm - 8:30pm.
Wednesday or Thursday Sept 30 or Oct 1 : 6:00 - 9:00pm


Service Projects
Please contact us for more information on these and other short-term opportunities

  • Sponsor children from a Women's Center client family for the holidays.

  • Volunteer to wrap donated Christmas gifts.

  • Donate gift cards to department stores, bookstores, restaurants or movie theaters for clients who may be spending the holidays alone.

  • Host a donation drive to collect items such as:

     New teddy bears             Puzzles
     Ladies sweatpants         Journals
     Reading glasses             Panties
     Post-it Notes                    Flash drives

 

Special Events

 

  • Victory Over Violence Walk/Run
    April 4, 2009

    Volunteer at the event by helping at a water station, in the refreshment area, at registration, on the course or at the finish line.
